Gritting

Lancashire Highways has a fleet of gritters and snow ploughs ready to respond throughout winter.

Gritters spread salt on roads to help prevent ice from forming. This makes roads safer for people travelling by car, bus, bicycle and on foot.

We prioritise the busiest routes first. These include roads used by emergency services, public transport and people travelling to work, school and healthcare facilities.

This approach helps keep key routes open while making the best use of salt supplies throughout the winter season.

During heavy snow

Salt becomes less effective in heavy snowfall.

When this happens, our teams may:

  • use snow ploughs to clear roads

  • respond to winter-related emergencies

We also have 30,000 litres of liquid de-icer available for extreme conditions when road temperatures fall below the level at which salt remains effective and compacted snow cannot be cleared by ploughing alone.
