Using grit bins

Grit bins are provided to help make public highways and footpaths safer during icy weather.

If you see ice on roads, pavements, slopes or steps, you may be able to use a nearby grit bin to help treat the area.

You can:

  • spread a small amount of grit on icy surfaces

  • focus on slopes, steps and busy walking routes

  • take care when applying grit in slippery conditions

  • help create safer routes for pedestrians, wheelchair users and mobility scooter users

  • use the grit only on public roads, pavements and rights of way

Do not use grit from council grit bins on private driveways or private property.

Remember to be winter ready. Plan ahead, travel carefully, use grit bins where needed and look out for others in your community.

Together, we can help keep Lancashire safe and moving throughout winter.
