Setup from home
Setting up a device for the first time – Home or Non LCC building
The first time a device is used from delivery/handover, a short initial setup is required to be performed.
This takes approximately 30-60 minutes before the device can be fully used. During this time, applications are installed, and configuration is downloaded from Microsoft over the internet.
Please power up the device, and ensure it is connected to the power supply in the box.
The first couple of screens may ask you to choose the language, region and keyboard layout of the device.
Ensure you select English (United Kingdom) or United Kingdom for all these options if requested.
If asked to setup a 2nd keyboard layout, please choose Skip
You will then get prompted to join a network. Ensure you are somewhere where WiFi is available.
- Select to connect to the Wifi network you know the details of.
- Enter any password required to connect to the WiFi.
- Some Wifi connections may ask if you would like the device to be discoverable, select no.
- If the Wifi is for example in a hotel, train or coffee shop, it may use what is called a "Captive Portal" where you need to give more information (or pay) before it lets you connect (e.g. an email address or logon using facebook, this will popup if required.
- Please note some internet connections which require you to login or pre-pay for access may not work with this setup method, if this is the case, please find a location with a non restricted internet connection available.
- Tethering to a mobile phone is possible, however should only be used as a last resort if a more suitable internet connection cannot be found.
- Click Connect, and wait to be connected to the network.
- Click Next button when it appears.
If you do not have access to a WiFi network
- If you do not currently have access to a location with an internet connection, you will be unable to setup your device as internet access is a requirement.
- Please only continue if you have access to the internet in the location you are at.
The device will automatically connect to Microsoft, recognise it belongs to Lancashire County Council, and show you the following screen, asking you to log on.
Please:
- Enter your work email address in the email field.
- Enter your password that you would normally use to logon to your Windows 10 device in the password field.
- The device will now automatically complete the configuration and setup process, no additional user interaction is required until the logon screen appears. This may take up to an hour to complete, and a few reboots.
- Login to the device with your standard ad username and password.
- If you get an error when logging on for the first time, try and restart the device. If the issue continues, please see the below section "I can't logon my device for the first time"
- As this is the first time you are logging onto the device it will take a little longer – up to 5 minutes.
- You will then be presented with the desktop icons, your device setup is now complete.
- Please see the 'Support' section for details regarding any additional software you may require.
