Active travel schemes
Active travel means moving around in a more physically active way. Walking or cycling for shorter journeys, such as going to the shops, school, or work, helps you stay active and improves your health.
More than 40% of journeys under two miles in Lancashire are made by car. We want to make it easier, safer, and more convenient for people to walk and cycle for regular, shorter journeys.
Walking
There are many walking routes across Lancashire, including Preston's Guild Wheel, to help you get around on foot.
Cycling
We provide information to help you cycle around Lancashire, whether you are new to cycling or looking for routes.
Go Velo offers free Learn to Ride sessions and Level 3 Bikeability and route planning courses during the summer holidays. These sessions are funded by Lancashire County Council and take place in several districts. Find out about courses in your area and how to book at Go Velo’s website (cycle training, bikeability, cycle coaching - holiday clubs).
Bikeability also has short films with tips and advice to help families enjoy cycling together.
Getting the bus
Taking the bus is a way to be more active. Our bus network helps you and your family travel at a low cost.
You can use our bus timetables to find the right route and plan your journey. Find out about the range of fares and promotions available.
Travelling by car
Using our park and ride services can help you add more steps to your day. There are three park and ride sites in Lancashire: two serve Preston city centre and one serves Lancaster city centre.
What we are doing
With the right infrastructure, more people can make shorter journeys on foot or by bike. This helps improve public health, air quality, and road safety, and reduces local carbon emissions.
We have a long-term plan to develop local cycling and walking networks across Lancashire. Our aim is to create safer, greener, and healthier travel opportunities. We are delivering schemes to increase active travel by creating better-connected, greener, safer, and healthier communities where people want to live and work.

Funded schemes
Several schemes are in place or planned after successful funding bids.
In 2020, we received £2.8 million from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund to help more people walk and cycle safely for short journeys. In May 2023, we received a further £5.5 million.
In 2023, we were awarded £50 million from round two of the government’s Levelling Up Fund. We are developing detailed plans for our Levelling Up East Lancashire programme.
Some of the schemes planned or being delivered to support active travel across Lancashire include:
