Scooters

E scooters

Whilst it is legal to own an electric scooter in the UK, there are lots of restrictions about where they can be used. Privately owned scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

It is illegal to use them on public roads, pavements, in cycle lanes and pedestrian-only areas.

Electric scooter rental trials have been underway in areas across the UK since 2020 and it is legal to ride an electric scooter that has been rented under these schemes with the proviso that you hold a valid full or provisional driving licence that includes the category "Q" entitlement.

Insurance is also needed for the electric scooter but is provided by the electric scooter rental operator. The government information below is about the rental trials.
