Course Overview
This course is designed for employees who, during their daily duties are involved with the operating of Winter Maintenance Equipment including: Gritters, Snow Ploughs, Snow-Blowers and the delivery of Winter Maintenance Services.
Course Aim
This course is designed to assess and evidence the competency of drivers involved in a variety o Winter Maintenance Operations` including: Elements of Health and Safety, Salt Spreading Operations , Snow Ploughing, and Snow-blower operations. The course also aims to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and the management of health and safety at work regulations 1999.
Learning Objectives
In order to achieve the course aim the following objectives will be need to be demonstrated and assessed during the course:
Prepare and Operate Winter Service Vehicles and Snow Ploughs
Vehicle Checking
Exactrak Route Navigation and Automated Salting System
Spreader fixed
Plough Usage and Fitting, Fault Identification
Snow Blowers (where applicable)
Learning Outcomes
Create a safe working environment and compliance with legislation and Lancashire County Council policies and procedures
Understand the Safe operation of Winter Service Equipment and the associated risk factors
Correct operation of all
Winter Maintenancevehicles, equipment and correct selection and use of all necessary Personal Protective Equipment.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of injuries and diseases reportable under RIDDOR and correct use of work equipment covered under, The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)1998
Understand how to reduce the risks of injury to the operator, third parties and damage to equipment.
Learning Methods
The competence assessment process known as Show-Me, Tell-Me or Explain-to Me is the recognised assessment method used by DVSA and ROSPA.
This process allows for a smoother and more continuous assessment to take place, and gives the trainer a more flexible approach towards fault analysis and rectification during the initial assessment. Feedback can then be given to the candidate in real-time as opposed to receiving retrospective, less memorable, or irrelevant feedback.
