Oliver McGowan mandatory training - guidance notes

Foster carers must complete Tier 1 of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. Follow the steps below to complete the first part of the training.

About the training

The training is named after Oliver McGowan. Oliver was a young man whose death highlighted the need for health and social care staff to better understand and support autistic people and people with a learning disability.

The government prefers and recommends the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism for health and social care.

The training has two tiers. Foster carers need to complete Tier 1.

The first part of Tier 1 is online learning. Everyone must complete it, whatever their workplace or the tier they need. It is free.

The second part of Tier 1 is a live, one-hour interactive online session.

Register and complete the online learning

  1. Register for an account on the NHS England e-learning for healthcare hub. Use your personal email address.

  2. Enter the workplace details (example shown below).
