Update on PE and Sport Funding for 2026/27
The funding landscape for physical education and school sport in England is undergoing a significant period of transition, with important changes planned for the 2026/27 academic year.
The Department for Education (DfE) has announced a £150 million increase in transition funding for the 2026/27 academic year. This additional investment is intended to support schools during the move towards the new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, which is scheduled to begin delivery from April 2027. The network is designed to strengthen collaboration between schools, local organisations, national governing bodies and specialist providers, with the aim of improving the quality, consistency and impact of physical education and school sport across England.
As part of this transition, schools are expected to receive a one-off payment of approximately £8,000 in October 2026, to be spent during the 2026/27 academic year.
For the year 2026 to 2027, the amounts payable will be:
schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils will receive £390 per pupil
schools with 17 or more eligible pupils will receive £6240 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil
This funding is intended to ensure that schools are well supported as the new Partnerships Network begins working with schools from January 2027 ahead of full implementation in April 2027.
The Department for Education has published the Conditions of Grant, guidance and reporting templates see below for 2026/2027.
