Primary PE and Sports Premium Funding Continuation

I am pleased to confirm that the funding for the Primary PE and Sports Premium for the academic year 2025 to 2026 has been confirmed for all eligible schools. This has come at a crucial time and will allow schools to plan for next academic year. In 2025 to 2026, schools will receive 2 equal payments; 50% of eligible funding will be delivered in autumn followed by a second 50% payment in spring using the same formula as in previous years.

Dear Headteacher and PE Subject Leader

This week Minister Gould signed off this year’s Primary PE and sport premium guidance and the guidance has been published alongside a new Monitoring and Tracking Form, of which can be found below with other relevant links and resources.

The Association for PE (afPE) recommends that schools upload Part A of the documentation to their website and retain Part B within their internal school systems to effectively monitor expenditure.

To support schools in navigating any forthcoming changes, afPE are planning to host a webinar in collaboration with the Department for Education (DfE) and the Youth Sport Trust. Additionally, a recorded walk-through video will be shared early next week to guide you through the updated processes.

This year's PE and Sport Premium funding will be distributed in two equal instalments—October and April—providing increased flexibility for spending during the summer term. Please note that carry-over of funds is not permitted; all allocations must be fully spent and accounted for within the designated timeframe.

I am receiving a growing number enquiries regarding the future of the funding. At present, afPE are unable to provide definitive answers, but afPE anticipate being able to offer further updates by December.

In light of this uncertainty, it is essential that schools refrain from entering into agreements with external providers beyond 31 July 2026 if those arrangements are dependent on continued PE and Sport Premium funding.

Many thanks,

Jessica Squires
