Home library service

If you can’t get to a library because of age, health, caring duties, or mobility issues, you can use the home library service.

You can use the service all the time or for a short while. For example, in winter or when you’re getting better after an illness or operation.

A friend, relative or carer can collect books for you. If this is not possible, volunteers can deliver books to your home free of charge.

You can borrow:

  • books and audiobooks

  • music CDs

  • DVDs

  • large print books

  • children’s books

  • information books

How the home library service works

To join the home library service call 0300 123 6703 or email library@lancashire.gov.uk.

A library or volunteer officer will visit you at home. They will:

  • help you join the library if you are not already a member

  • talk to you about the authors and genres you like

  • ask whether you prefer large print or audiobooks

  • create a reader profile so staff can choose books that match your interests

Library staff can choose books, CDs, audiobooks and DVDs for you, or you can request specific items.

If someone can pick up your books, they can collect them every four weeks from the library that’s easiest for them to visit.

If a volunteer delivers your books, they will visit every four weeks on an agreed day. You can ask them for particular titles or authors, and they will pass this on to staff.

There are no fines or charges for home library service customers.

All volunteers are DBS‑checked.

You can also use eBooks, eAudiobooks and other online library resources without visiting a library.

Volunteering for the home library service

We are always looking for volunteers to help deliver books and information to home library service customers. Visit the Lancashire Volunteer Partnership website for more details.
