Haslingden Old Road
Repairs to retaining wall
We're carrying out repairs to a retaining wall on Haslingden Old Road (B6236) in Hyndburn to allow the road to be reopened and diversions to be removed.
This road is a key link between Haslingden, Accrington and Blackburn. Work is ongoing to rebuild the wall following a major landslip which occurred during heavy rain in early January 2025.
The significant scale of the landslip, which moved around 2,500 metric tonnes of earth, left the road unsafe for vehicles to use.
You can see the scale of the damage in this video recorded in August 2025 before repair work started: You Tube video Haslingden Old Road collapse.
Repair schedule
We have been working closely with our contractor since they were appointed in March to design and plan the repairs.
The repair will take the form of a reinforced earth retaining wall, an innovative solution which will ensure a safe and durable repair while offering good value for money for a project of this scale and complexity.
The current timeline for the project is as follows. We are aiming to complete the works during 2026, however Haslingden Old Road presents a significant engineering challenge and timescales could change if we encounter issues such as bad weather and poor ground conditions.
January 2025 to September 2025 – Clearance of debris, followed by detailed surveys to inform the repairs needed to stabilise the embankment, divert utilities, improve drainage, and rebuild the retaining wall
October 2025 to March 2026 – Invitation to tender and appointment of contractor
March 2026 to June 2026 – Detailed design, environmental consents and final site preparation
July 2026 – Establish site compound, construct access route and clear vegetation. Excavation of existing slope down to foundation level of the new wall
August 2026 – October 2026 – Build new retaining wall
· October 2026 – Construct new road surface, kerbing and vehicle restraint barrier
November 2026 – Reinstate access route and surrounding area to previous condition, and remove site compound
We'll share more pictures and information on this page as work progresses.
