Development opportunities for Extra Care in Lancashire

Extra Care housing and supported living help people stay independent in their own homes for longer. This can prevent, reduce, or delay the need for more intensive support, such as residential care.

We want to improve services for older people across Lancashire. A key part of this is increasing the number of Extra Care housing schemes.

How we support new Extra Care developments

To help deliver more Extra Care housing, the Council may:

  • Use land owned by the county council or district councils

  • Work with developers to deliver new Extra Care schemes

  • Support private and mixed‑tenure developments, working with district housing authorities

  • Encourage registered providers (housing associations) and private developers to put forward site proposals

  • Remodel older sheltered housing schemes

  • Develop schemes with the NHS as part of its estates management programme
