Documents required when giving notice

Photographs foreign nationals only

If either party to marriage or civil partnership is a citizen of any country other than UK and Ireland, without EUSS leave, an immigration control exemption, or settled status, both parties must take a passport style photograph to the appointment to be retained by the registration officer.

Your photo should:

  • have been taken recently and show a current likeness
  • be taken against a plain, light-coloured background
  • include your head, shoulders, and upper body
  • not contain other objects or people
  • not have ‘red eye’
  • not be marked, altered, torn, or creased

In your photo you should:

  • be in clear contrast to the background
  • be facing forwards, and looking straight at the camera
  • have a plain expression (not smiling)
  • have your mouth closed
  • have your eyes open and visible
  • not have hair in front of your eyes
  • not have a head covering (unless it is for religious or medical reasons)
  • not have anything covering your face
  • not have any shadows on your face or behind you

If you do not take a photograph each to your appointment, and photographs are required, the registration officer will not be able to take your notices.
