Winter wellness
Winter can be a busy time, especially in the run up to Christmas. This makes it an especially important time to look after your mental and physical health. Find out more on this page about how to look after yourself and the people you care about.
Protect yourself from nasty bugs
Colds and flu can be a challenge at this time of year, but you can often treat them at home.
Your local pharmacy can provide advice and help you to manage your symptoms. Remember you should only visit A&E in an emergency. If you're not sure, call 111 for guidance.
One of the best ways to protect yourself is by getting a flu vaccine. It’s quick, easy and helps to protect you and people around you. There are things you can do to protect against Covid and common coughs and colds too - wash your hands regularly and stay home if you’re feeling unwell.

Look after your mental health
Colder weather and darker nights can make it harder to get out and about, which can make you feel more isolated. It’s important to take care of your mental health, whether it’s chatting with a friend, relaxing with a cup of tea, or getting support. Mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical health.
If you or someone you care about are struggling, our Every Mind Matters page has lots of ways to get help.
Age UK offers check in calls for over 65s who feel isolated or lonely and want someone to talk to.
Volunteering can be a wonderful way to meet new people, build meaningful connections, and become part of a community. You only need to commit to an hour per week. For more information about volunteering opportunities call Lancashire Volunteer Partnership on 01772 532312 from 10am - 2pm Monday - Friday or visit the Lancashire Volunteer Partnership.

Keep warm and well
There are lots of things you can do to keep warm and well when it's cold.
Keeping warm in winter helps to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.
Keep an eye on people who are more vulnerable to the cold weather, especially if they have any ongoing medical conditions. Check they are keeping warm during cold weather and make sure they’re stocked up with enough food for a few days, in case they can’t go out.
There are lots of Warm Spaces across Lancashire where you can go to escape the cold. Our local libraries are warm and welcoming spaces where you can sit, use the services in the library and even have a free hot drink. Lancashire's Family Hubs provide warm spaces for children, young people and families during the winter, including lots of group activities.
Our Cost of Living hub has lots of advice on help available in Lancashire, including information to help with energy bills, benefits advice and more.
Get out and about
Staying active when it’s cold outside can be more difficult, but it's worth it, especially if you're feeling the winter blues.
Exercise has lots of benefits - it doesn't just make your heart healthier, it also helps to improve your mood.
Small things like leaving the car at home and making short journeys on foot or on your bike can make a big difference.
If you’d prefer to be indoors, try joining a local gym, dancing or yoga. You could also take a brisk walk, especially to enjoy wintery views of Lancashire.
Avoid falls
Winter means icy and snowy conditions, and the increased risk of slips and falls. To avoid falling in icy weather you should:
- take your time and walk carefully
- be aware of your surroundings and choose well-lit routes
- wear non-slip shoes
- use handrails where available
- keep walkways, driveways and steps clear of snow and ice
We have lots of tips to help you prevent falls and information about what to do if you are concerned after a fall or need support with your mobility.
