Exploring
In Lancashire, we're spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring nature and enjoying fantastic views.
From country parks and picnic sites, open spaces, community woodlands, greenways and cycleways, there are lots of ways you can enjoy the outdoors in our county.
Things to do
To discover a wide range of activities and attractions throughout the county, make sure to check out things to do in the great outdoors on the Visit Lancashire website. Here, you’ll find free events, markets, museums, animal farms, walking or bike routes, and much more, to help you plan your activities this summer!
Picnics
If you're in the mood to pack a rucksack and head off for some al-fresco dining, we have some beautiful picnic spots for you.
National Landscapes
Here in Lancashire, we're very proud to have the Forest of Bowland and Arnside and Silverdale National Landscapes (previously called Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Both are crucial areas for wildlife, including some of our Local Nature Recovery Strategy target species. The Forest of Bowland is home to the iconic hen harrier, bilberry bumblebee, tormentil mining bee and the large heath butterfly, all of which are declining in England.
Arnside and Silverdale is home to a host of butterflies, including the target species Duke of Burgundy, high-brown fritillary and pearl-bordered fritillary as well as the lady's-slipper orchid, which is critically endangered and one of the rarest plants in the UK.
Country parks
We're also lucky to be home to two stunning country parks, Beacon Fell and Wycoller – why not put on your walking boots and come and explore?
Walking and cycling
Fancy a walk? Whether you're after a gentle stroll or you're more of an experienced rambler, check out the walking routes on the Visit Lancashire website. Maybe you'd like to learn something along the way (we recommend the Walking With Witches trail) or maybe you'd like the walk to end at a good pub with the dog in tow - get planning your next adventure!

Reducing screen time
The summer is also the perfect time to demonstrate the importance of getting outdoors and off screens. It is easy to lose track of time without the regular routine of school and work, however there is evidence to say that days spent inside on digital screens can have a negative impact on our young people's mental health. If you'd like hints and tips on reducing screen time, you can find tips to reduce screen time on the Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust website.
Museums
How many of Lancashire's museums have you checked off your list? Summer is the perfect time to get a glimpse of Lancashire's rich history and heritage with our family and friends Xplorer pass. Be sure to check out our museums and heritage page to see the range of different museum offers and experiences we have available.
