St Annes - Clifton Drive North Phase 2
We have been working with Sustrans on this scheme. The goal is to create a safe, segregated cycling and walking route from Blackpool to Saint Annes. The route along the coast is also part of National Cycleway 62 connecting Fleetwood in Lancashire with Selby in North Yorkshire.
After completing the first phase in 2022, the scheme follows. The first phase consisted of 1.8km of separated walking and cycling paths, which cost £1.3 million. They reduced the speed limit on the A584 from 40mph to 30mph, affecting the existing footway. It has resulted in a 200% increase in cycling and a 150% increase in walking from 2021 to 2022.
The section we want to improve for Phase 2 of this scheme is approximately 250m in length. This includes junction improvements and signalised crossings to make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to safely travel along the route and cross the A584.
Currently, this section of Clifton Drive North (A584) is a busy road with a narrow foot way. It has advisory cycle lanes and road markings. Both the footway and advisory cycle lane are frequently used for car parking.
The junction with Highbury Road West is a collision hot spot with 8 incidents in the last 5 years. This scheme will seek to change this by installing signalised crossings.
