Positive Behaviour Support Refresher for the Shared Lives Service - SL0011

This course has been specifically developed for Lancashire County Council Adult Disability Shared Lives Service and invites carers as either and Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support or as a refresher course having previously attended a Shared Lives PBS course in the past.

It is a requirement for Shared Lives Carers to update their Positive Behaviour Support theory every three years

Course Aims

To introduce/refresh and update Shared Lives Carers on the Principles of Positive Behaviour underpinned by the framework of the Lancashire Model and the four-tiered approach detailed in the Adult Disability Policy on the use of Positive Behaviour Support, Physical Intervention and Restrictive Practices (May 2017).

Positive Behaviour Support is a multicomponent framework for developing an understanding of behaviour that challenges. It is based on the assessment of the broad social, physical and individual context in which the behaviour occurs, and uses this information to develop a range of evidence-based support. The overall goal is to enhance the person’s quality of life, thus reducing the likelihood of challenging behaviour occurring in the first place.

The training is underpinned by the standards set out in Restraint Reduction Network Training Standards (2019) that provide a national and international benchmark for training in supporting people who are distressed in education, health and social care settings.

In addition to improving training and practice, the standards will:-

Protect people's fundamental rights and promote person centred, best interest and therapeutic approaches to supporting people when they are distressed

Reduce reliance on restrictive practices by promoting positive culture and practice that focuses on prevention, de-escalation, and reflective practice to minimise use of restrictive practices

Increase focus on prevention, understanding of the root causes of behaviour and recognition that many behaviours are the result of distress due to failing to meet needs

Improve staff and carer skills and confidence in how to keep people safe in crisis and better understand how to meet people's needs in order to prevent crisis situations

Improve the quality of life both of people at risk of being restrained and those supporting them

Where required, focus on the safe use of restrictive interventions including physical restraint
