Course Overview:
This course is designed for employees who, during their daily duties are involved with the operating of `Winter Maintenance Equipment` including: Gritters, Snow Ploughs, Snow-Blowers and the delivery of Winter Maintenance Services.
Course Aim:
This course is designed to prepare drivers for a variety of `Winter Maintenance Operations` including: All elements of Health and Safety related issues, Salt Spreading Operations , Snow Ploughing, and Snow-blower operations. The course also aims to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and the management of health and safety at work regulations 1999.
Learning Objectives:
In order to achieve the course aim the following objectives will be covered during the course:
Winter Service Health and Safety
Prepare and Operate Winter Service Vehicles and Snow Ploughs
Vehicle Checking
Exactrak Route Navigation and Automated Salting System
Spreader fixed
Plough Usage and Fitting
Snow Blowers
Learning Outcomes:
- Create a safe working environment and compliance with legislation and Lancashire County Council policies and procedures
- Understand the Safe operation of Winter Service Equipment and the associated risk factors
- Correct handling of substances covered by COSH and correct selection and use of all necessary Personal Protective Equipment
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of injuries and diseases reportable under RIDDOR and correct use of work equipment covered under, The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)1998
- Understand how to reduce the risks of injury to the operator, third parties and damage to equipment
Learning Methods
A range of teaching and learning methods including presentation, videos and demonstration will be used with a focus on individual and group participation. This will include a practical quiz style element based on information learnt in the classroom environment.
