Course Overview:
This course has been designed for employees who, during their daily duties are involved with the operating of a variety of `Grounds Maintenance Equipment`, including: (Long and Short reach Hedge Cutters, Pedestrian Mowers, Strimmer's, Leaf Blowers, Lawn Edger's, Portable Power Washer and Ride-on Equipment).
Due to the nature of this course group sizes are restricted to a maximum of 6 people.
Course Aim:
This course has been developed to ensure that LCC employees who are required to use Grounds Maintenance Equipment understand the daily safety checks to carry out, how to use the equipment safely also how to report faults and defects to the equipment.
The course also aims to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations1999 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998.
Learning Objectives:
- Provide information on the legal responsibilities Lancashire County Council polices & procedures & risk assessments.
- Describe a wide range of grounds maintenance equipment used daily by Lancashire County Council grounds maintenance team, both petrol, and electric powered equipment including: (Long and Short reach Hedge Cutters, Pedestrian Mowers, Strimmer's, Leaf Blowers, Lawn Edger's and Portable Power Washer).
- Operatives will also be given procedural guidance on using larger plant equipment including: Ride-on Triple Mowers and Flails and Sherpa ride-on / Remote-controlled Mower.
- Operatives will be shown how to carry out daily checks on equipment, how to report defects, the need to check any required tagging systems and how to use the equipment safely.
- Also, to understand the consequences of using equipment in relation to the possible exposure to HAVS and the necessity to manage/mitigate this exposure by using HAVTECH devices and following all LCC HAVS protocols.
- Provide knowledge of Health & Safety and PUWER legal requirements and the correct use of appropriate PPE regulations.
- Explain the consequences of overloading vehicles and the possible dangers posed by insecure loads.
Learning Outcomes
- Create a safe working environment & compliance with legislation and Lancashire County Council polices /procedures.
- Understand the importance of carrying out pre-use checks on all ground's equipment and any related hazards when equipment is faulty/defective.
- Competency in being able to demonstrate the correct pre-use checks and operate safely in the workplace.
- Reducing risk of injury to operator and third parties and equipment damage prevention.
Learning Methods
Learners will use a variety of teaching & learning methods including, classroom presentations, question and answer sessions, demonstrations, also Individual and group participation.
