Aims

Adolescence is a time of significant progression of development, with a radical reorganisation of the brain and issues around the development of separation, power, autonomy and independence. This presents all parents with challenges around guidance and boundaries when supporting young people in their care. This training is designed to help foster carers to reflect and consider ways they can support and respond to adolescents to gain their trust and cooperation.

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Be aware of Brain reorganisation during adolescence including issues of risk taking, power, autonomy and control
  • Be aware of the impact of trauma on information processing and perception
  • Recognise the importance of and significance of power dynamics in human relationships
  • Explore the importance of how power is managed by parents/carers through a child’s ongoing development
  • Explore their own relationship with power and control
  • Provide practical ways of responding to, reflecting on and supporting in the face of adolescent resistant, angry or coercive behaviour that can support both foster carer and the adolescent to feel more empowered and gain cooperation, build positive connections.
