Effective communication and keeping written records - FC0020

This course is for Foster carers and Adopters

Aims

To assist foster carers and adopters to appreciate the need to effectively communicate with children and young people. Keeping useful, personal and accurate records on children looked after which can serve a number of important purposes.

Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how you listen to and understand the wishes and feelings of children and young people.
  • Describe the need to use appropriate means of communication with children and young people including non-verbal and other means and give examples from your practice.
  • Demonstrate that you respond appropriately to children and young people in clear, jargon-free language, without being patronising.
  • Outline how you help children and young people to make their own decisions.
  • Describe effective ways of communicating with children and young people.
  • Discuss some of the common difficulties in communicating with children and young people and give examples of how you try to overcome these.
  • Describe how to use different communications media.
  • List the importance of keeping accurate records.
  • To be familiar with the record keeping policy of your fostering agency and how information is shared with others, including children and young people and their families.
  • Outline the key principles on how to record understandable, relevant, clear and concise, factual information that can be checked.
  • Give examples how to enable children and young people to participate in record keeping and keep their own records and memorabilia.
