Caring for pre-pubescent children with sexual behaviour problems

This one-day workshop is for foster carers with a pre-pubescent child in their care (primary school age)

N.B. This course does not relate to adolescent children. A separate course is available for adolescents.

Please note this course does not relate to adolescent children i.e. secondary school age. Carers with children at secondary school, should apply for "Caring for young people with harmful sexualised behaviour' training.

Aim(s)
The course aims to support carers to identify the difference between age-expected and problematic sexual behaviour and provides guidance on how to manage and respond to such behaviours and when to seek further advice, assessment, or intervention.

Objectives

  • To help carers consider and identify the differences between healthy, age expected and problematic sexual behaviour in pre-pubescent children.
  • To help carers identify when there is a need to consult with their support workers that help is required.
  • To highlight some of the common facts and myths in this area
  • To provide an insight of why and how children can develop problematic sexual behaviours.
  • To consider some basic strategies for monitoring, responding to and managing sexual behaviour (whether age-expected or problematic in nature) in a supportive and positive way
  • To consider the key care and wider therapeutic needs of such children
  • To provide carers with an opportunity to discuss and share their questions, fears and worries and to consider their future needs.
