Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)
Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) are young people who have journeyed to the UK unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
They are automatically a looked after child (LAC) under the care of the local authority.
Refugees and asylum seekers
Asylum seekers are people who come to the UK because they are unsafe in their home country.
Refugees are people who have had their asylum claims accepted by the UK government. They have the right to stay in the UK for up to 5 years. After that they can apply to stay in the UK indefinitely.
Support
These children may have language needs, such as not being able to speak English. Therefore, we need to provide resources to support these needs.
The adviser service offer support to schools, see the English as an additional language page on the Lancashire Professional Development Service site.
