Duke of Edinburgh Award

D of E approved activity provider logoLancashire Outdoor Education is an Approved Activity Provider (AAP) for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. As an AAP we can support DofE expeditions across all levels of the award both on land and on the water. Our packages include full training in preparation for the expeditions and both a practice and assessment expedition.

Our packages are designed to:

  • Enable students to achieve success in a safe but challenging environment.
  • Students are supported to develop their independence and gain skills
  • Empower students to complete their expedition while having fun
  • Learn about themselves and others and the environment

Bronze Expedition Package

Package price: £235pp. (Price based on minimum booking of 14 participants).

  • Includes initial visit from Lancashire Outdoor Education
  • Support your assembly to students or students and parents
  • 1 day training at your venue or ours
  • 2 day practice expedition
  • 2 day assessment expedition

The initial meeting will allow one of our staff to come and discuss the package with you to allow us to confirm the suggested plans meet the needs of your organisation and answer any questions you might have.

This will allow us to support you better in delivering the DofE and make the expedition training package run smoother.

The training day can be delivered at your venue if local to one of our centres or delivered at one of our activity centres (transport not included), if access to your buildings isn’t possible. Students will be working with our highly qualified instructors and receive a full day of training on route planning and navigation, dealing with an emergency and kit and equipment.

Example itinerary

  • 9am: brief and form walking groups
  • 9.30am:navigation and map training
  • 10.30am: BREAK
  • 10.45am: Expedition route planning
  • 11.45am: kit talk
  • 12.45pm: LUNCH
  • 1.15pm:  Emergency response
  • 2.15pm: BREAK
  • 2.30pm: Stoves and tents
  • 3.30pm: Debrief

During the practice expedition our qualified staff will support your young people to complete the 2 day, 1 night expedition. The expedition will take place around one of our activity centres which is where groups will be camping for the night. If you would like to stay at a different campsite this can be arranged at an additional cost.

Day 1

During the first day groups will work closely with our staff to improve their navigation skills, ability to working together and learning and discussing the use of emergency procedures. Once groups reach the campsite LOE staff will support the groups to set up tents and cook their evening meal, at this point we will hand over to your organisations staff for the evening supervision.

Day 2

On the second day of the expedition groups will be remotely supervised by our staff to give them an experience of how the assessment expedition will be. Staff will still be available should groups need any support during the day. After successfully reaching the endpoint the expedition manager will speak to all participants to debrief the expedition and highlight any important learning points before assessment.

During the assessment expedition groups will be remotely supervised during both days and will complete all navigation independently meeting up with our staff at predetermined checkpoints throughout the route.

Lancashire Outdoor Education staff will again support groups once they reach the campsite to set up camp and use the stoves safely. Assessment Expeditions will take place at a different Lancashire Outdoor Education centre to the practice expedition unless you have requested it to take place at an independent campsite (this will be at an additional cost).

At the end of the expedition the DofE assessors will debrief each group about their expedition and how it has gone, and the steps required for completing the rest of the award and encourage them to progress onto the next stage of the award if possible.

Silver Expedition Package

Package price: £322pp. (Price based on minimum booking of 14 participants).

  • Includes initial visit from Lancashire Outdoor Education
  • Support your assembly to students or students and parents
  • 1 day training
  • 3 day practice expedition
  • 3 day assessment expedition

The initial meeting will allow one of our staff to come and discuss the package with you to allow us to confirm the suggested plans meet the needs of your organisation and answer any questions you might have.

This will allow us to support you better in delivering the DofE and make the expedition training package run smoother.

The training day is designed to refresh the skills learnt from completing the Bronze Award and developing new skills for those joining straight in at the Silver Award. The day will take place in an environment and terrain relevant to the level of the award being completed. Our staff will meet you at the arranged start location.

Once participants have been split into their arranged walking groups our staff will support the groups to complete the planned route developing their existing map reading skills and talking about more advanced navigation techniques appropriate to the environment. During the day groups will also discuss first aid in the remote environment and emergency procedures appropriate for that environment.

Throughout the day the group leader will also discuss with the group about the equipment the group have and make any required recommendations about appropriate kit for Silver Award Expeditions. This full day training will build on the existing skills acquired on the Bronze Award and provide the necessary competencies required to complete the Silver Expedition.

During the practice expedition our qualified staff will support your young people to complete the 3 day, 2 night expedition.


Day 1

Groups will meet our staff at the arranged start location and complete a day walk to refresh on the skills discussed on the training day. This day will also be used to refresh people knowledge on the group equipment and how this can be safely used and how to pack a bag efficiently.


Day 2

Our staff will meet the group early in the morning to support the group to make breakfast and take down camp. The group will be remotely supervised throughout the day by our staff and will complete the planned route, meeting up with staff at predetermined checkpoints throughout the day. Upon reaching the campsite our staff will support the group to set up camp and help them to safely prepare their meal.

Day 3

Our staff will meet the group early in the morning to support them to make breakfast and take down camp. The group will be remotely supervised throughout the day by our staff and will complete the planned route, meeting up with staff at predetermined checkpoints throughout the day. When reaching the end point our staff will debrief the group about the successes and challenges over the last few days and discuss the assessment expedition. All kit will be collected back in and checked before dismissing the group.

During the assessment expedition groups will be remotely supervised throughout the expedition meeting up with our assessors at predetermined checkpoints. These will have been discussed and arranged during the planning stages on the first day of the practice expedition and confirmed each morning before the group’s setoff.

At the end of the expedition the DofE assessors will debrief each group about their expedition and how it has gone, and the steps required for completing the rest of the award and encourage them to progress onto the next stage of the award if possible.

Package price: £411pp. (Price based on minimum booking of 14 participants).

  • 4 day assessment expedition

The initial meeting will allow one of our staff to come and discuss the package with you to allow us to confirm the suggested plans meet the needs of your organisation and answer any questions you might have.

This will allow us to support you better in delivering the DofE and make the expedition training package run smoother.

The training day is designed to refresh the skills learnt from completing other stages of the DofE and developing new skills. Anyone entering directly into the Gold Award will require additional training and will be subject to additional costs. The day will take place in an environment and terrain relevant to the level of the award being completed. Our staff will meet you at the arranged start location.

Once participants have been split into their arranged walking groups our staff will support the groups to complete the planned route developing their existing map reading skills and talking about more advanced navigation techniques appropriate to the environment.

During the day, groups will also discuss first aid in the remote environment and emergency procedures appropriate for that environment. Throughout the day the group leader will also discuss with the group about the equipment the group have and make any required recommendations about appropriate kit for Silver Award Expeditions.

This full day training will build on the existing skills acquired on the Bronze and Silver Award and provide the necessary competencies required to complete the Gold Expedition.

 

During the practice expedition our qualified staff will support your young people to complete the 4 day, 3 night expedition. (Direct entrants require 2 practice expeditions).

Day 1

Groups will meet our staff at the arranged start location and complete a day walk to refresh on the skills discussed on the training day. This day will also be used to refresh people knowledge on the group equipment and how this can be safely used, how to pack a bag efficiently and groups will complete the route plans for the assessment expedition.
