Thank you for Summer fun and games
Wednesday, September 8, 2021
As children return to school a big thank you has been given to everyone who ensured this summer's Holiday and Activity Fund (HAF) schemes were a big success.
Activities including street games, sports, circus skills and the arts, were made available to young people across the county to keep them entertained during the summer break.
Lancashire County Council, working with a wide range of partners including district councils, third sector and private organisations, delivered the Lancashire Holiday Activity & Food programme. The HAF was available to any child eligible for free school meals.
Amongst the community and youth organisations taking part were Youth Action, Street Games, SHARES Lancashire and West Lancashire Sport Partnership.
The West End Community Centre in Burnley was one of many centres which played host to several activities, giving children the chance to meet with friends, have fun and learn something new in a safe environment.
Lindsey Turmore, a trustee at the Community Centre, said: "Over the summer holidays we've had 50 to 75 children for breakfast and lunch as well as physical activities for the children through Street Games.
"We also made 50 packed lunches to go each day and they had a choice of hot or cold food, salad's, fruits and vegetables, which were all on the menu.
"I've been a trustee for four years and it's great to have seen the centre go from strength to strength."
Cllr Cosima Towneley, cabinet member for children and families, said: "A huge thank you to the professionals and volunteers who have made this summer programme such a success. Your input has proved an inspiration.
"The funding was, of course, key and enabled the summer offer to be free, but the successful roll out depended on the collaborative efforts of community volunteers and professionals both front of house and behind the scenes. There was a myriad of activities both online and outdoors and this covered a happy, and often noisy, four hours of fun per day over a four week period."
Funding for the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF) has been provided from the government to Lancashire County Council, with the programme providing four hours per day per person over four weeks.
