Alongside our regular programme of training course for schools, we are able to offer bespoke training tailored to your needs.

Assessing EAL learners 

This course is designed so teachers and EAL coordinators will be able to assess EAL children using an EAL Assessment framework and feel prepared to lead their own school in assessing EAL children.

This course is based on our 'EAL or SEN? Language barrier or learning need?' toolkit and this provides schools with a guide to help identify EAL learners with different types of SEN and disabilities.

EAL learners will benefit greatly from learning and teaching strategies that help them access the curriculum and develop the academic language necessary for success in different curricular areas.

 

Supporting New Arrivals: How to create a welcoming environment, assess and teach International New Arrivals

This training will equip teachers with knowledge, skills and resources to create a welcoming environment, assess children and provide suitable learning and teaching strategies for all new arrivals

 

Developing language for learning - making the curriculum accessible for EAL learners

This course will help all primary teachers who want to develop strategies to ensure that the EAL learners in their classrooms can access the curriculum, improve their progress and achieve their full potential.

 

Differentiation for EAL pupils in the primary classroom

Teachers will explore planning effectively for all their EAL learners, including new arrivals and advanced learners, and using different strategies and resources to meet the needs of this varied group, allowing them to make progress.

 

EAL learners: a very practical course for teaching assistants working with EAL learners  

This session will consider strategies and resources that can be used when working in class and in small group situations with new arrivals and more advanced EAL learners.

The more aware teachers are of the similarities and differences between children's first language and the target language, the more effective their teaching strategies are in order to help their pupils learn English.

 

Welcoming and supporting Asylum Seekers and Refugee children in schools

Refugee children have often experienced disruption, violence and fear and they will have left everything that is familiar and will find themselves in a very different unknown environment. This training will help schools understand the learning and emotional needs of asylum seekers and refugees.

 

Developing speaking and listening skills for EAL pupils

This training will provide strategies for improving children's listening and speaking skills for learning. In this session teachers will find out suggestions for promoting the use of oral language in the mainstream classroom.

 

Developing reading skills for EAL pupils

This training will help teachers to identify appropriate reading strategies that can be utilised in teaching how to read text with EAL learners.

 

Developing writing skills for EAL pupils

In this training teachers will consider demands for EAL learners in terms of writing at word, sentence and whole text level.

 

Improving grammatical accuracy

This session explores difficulties EAL learners often have and mistakes they may continue to make in terms of grammar, and provides strategies and resources which enable you to support these learners.
