Reading Extension Pack
£55.00
This reading intervention has been designed to be used with pupils who have fallen behind with their reading despite high-quality phonics teaching and high-quality phonics intervention.
If pupils are struggling to read because of poor preparation/inadequate exposure to reading, or delay in the development of phonetic awareness etc, then more intense support with systematic teaching of phonics may be required. However, if the reading delay is due to children's additional needs e.g. inability to categorise sounds or connect sounds to meaning, then alternative strategies may need to be used to get pupils reading.
This reading intervention is based on precision teaching around whole words. It is designed to be used for pupils who are assessed to be reading between PIVATS
P Scale Milestone 5 up to Milestone 1 – Stage 1.
Please note, that this intervention is based on developing individual reading. Therefore, it is important to personalise the suggestions to make them relevant and motivating to the pupil involved.
It has been found that, once pupils have become more confident at word reading through whole word, they may then be ready to return to a synthetic phonics approach. However, for some pupils, they may need to continue to be supported in developing whole word/whole language approaches due to their individual learning needs.
Advice regarding any of the approaches mentioned or general advice for how to meet the needs of children falling behind with their reading can be found at the Lancashire SEND Specialist Teaching Service.
