English ECTs: How to Have a Successful First Year Teaching English 3-day course

Day 1: Reading fundamentals: supporting students to be effective readers in English, Tuesday 8th October 2024.

To provide practical support to ECTs for effective long term, medium term and short term planning in English.
To support ECTs in teaching effective reading of all texts in English using appropriate comprehension strategies.
To support ECTs to explicitly teaching vocabulary.
To support ECTs in teaching the disciplinary reading components of analysis and evaluation.
To support students to teach literary texts - with a focus on poetry and Shakespeare.

The first day of this three day series will explore the foundations of effective teaching and learning in English, with a focus on the key element of reading. This course will examine research- informed practice on how practitioners can best support students' fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development, as well as support students to critically examine and evaluate literary texts. It will also provide an invaluable opportunity for English ECTs to network with colleagues.

Day 2 – Writing fundamentals: supporting students to be effective writers in English, Thursday 9th January 2025.

To provide practical support to ECTs for the effective teaching of creative, transactional and academic writing.
To explore how the explicit teaching of structure and grammar underpins quality writing outcomes.
To provide ECTs with opportunities to network.

The second day of this three-day series will build on the fundamentals of teaching reading as covered in day one of the course. The focus will thus be on best practice in teaching different forms of writing as informed by the reading of exemplar texts: writing as a reader. There will also be a particular emphasis on the overt teaching of grammar for effect.

Day 3: An introduction to teaching GCSE English language & GCSE literature, Wednesday 25th June 2025.

To provide practical support to ECTs for the effective teaching of all components of GCSE English language and literature.
To provide ECTs with opportunities to network.

The final day of this three-day series will build on the fundamentals of English teaching as covered in day one and two of the course by looking at how to best support effective reading and writing at GCSE. Sessions will focus on the different components of both GCSE English language and GCSE English literature, and how best to support student learning for excellent outcomes.

Whilst the focus of this course is on the needs of ECTs, this course would be appropriate for recently qualified teachers and non-specialist English teachers.

This course is designed for delegates to attend all three dates (bookings will need to be made separately for each date) but there is the option to attend just one or two. Delegates who attend individual dates will be charged £208, or if you book two dates the cost will be £385 and attend all three dates, the cost will be £550.
