Ofsted's subject report into English (March 24) recommended that schools 'plan for progression in … writing with the same precision as progression in reading and literature, and teach the vocabulary, grammar and conventions of these'. Indeed, writing is a complex composite skill that comprises a myriad of components. Building on the aims of the national curriculum for English, this course explores how to demystify the process of writing from planning to composition, drafting and editing at key stage 3, with a focus on the precise, foundational components that pupils need to master and how these might be sequenced best. This course is suitable for teachers who wish to refine their practice in the explicit teaching of writing in English as well as English leaders who have responsibility for developing writing within the key stage 3 English curriculum and wish to explore how to improve their long-term approach. Time will be allocated for delegates to reflect on their school's writing strategy and to share good practice.
