  • Sarah Atkinson (Teaching and Learning Consultant - Primary English)

This half-day course aims to support teachers in:

• examining the progression of sentence construction across Key Stage 1, from orally constructing a sentence to recording it in written form;
• exploring creative and engaging strategies for teaching sentence construction, appealing to a range of learning styles;
• planning opportunities to teach and apply sentence skills.

Sentence construction is an essential part of improving writing. All children should leave Key Stage 1 with a sound understanding of what a sentence is and be able to use sentences accurately in their own written compositions. This course will provide teachers with the relevant knowledge in the progression of sentence construction focusing on transcription and composition, alongside practical strategies and a suggested model for teaching specific sentence types.
