  • James Orme (EAL Consultancy and Support Teacher)

This course will cover:
• understanding how developing pupils' language can help to increase their progress and raise standards;
• understanding the rationale for planning for speaking and listening for EAL learners and gain strategies to support the development of speaking and listening skills;
• understanding the importance and implications of developing language, including academic language structures and vocabulary; and
• knowing how to identify the language demands of the curriculum and plan for practical approaches developing these.

Many EAL learners pick up conversational English quickly and can appear fluent after only a few terms in school but it can take much longer to develop the language necessary for success at school.

This language needs to be taught explicitly and in this course we explore approaches and resources that support with this. This course will help all primary and secondary teachers who want to develop strategies to ensure that the EAL learners in their classrooms can access the curriculum, improve their progress and achieve their full potential.
