The ‘Lost’ Colours of the 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot

Description

These regimental colours came to light in 1994. They were acquired for the 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot in 1822 and were the first of the regiment's colours to carry the title 'Lancashire'.

At this time the 47th Regiment was stationed in India, and between 1824 to 1826 it took part in the First Burma War, fighting its way up the Irrawady River to Ava, near Mandalay. In 1829 the regiment sailed back to England after a foreign service tour of 22 years. They sailed in three transports which, despite having departed on the same day, arrived home at monthly intervals after voyages of between 6 to 8 months. The colours were replaced when the regiment arrived back in England.

It is not known what happened to the old standards in the 164 years from 1830 until 1994. However, old colours were often taken away by the Colonel of the Regiment, and at that time it was General Sir Alexander Hope GCB of Craighall, Scotland. It is, therefore, perhaps no co-incidence that they re-surfaced again in Scotland.
