Description

“Preston Guild” is a march that commemorates the Guild celebrations. It was first performed in the Guild Hall under the direction of its composer Major J. Howe MBE.

In 1179, King Henry II awarded Preston its first royal charter along with the right to have a Guild Merchant. Every 20 years since 1682, except for 1942 due to wartime interruption, there have been Guild celebrations.

This march for brass band, is a celebration of Lancashire’s proud history as one of the heartlands of the brass band movement. It was performed by the Longridge Band which was formed in 1845 and is one of the oldest brass bands in the world. Typically linked to Lancashire's industrial past and often representing workplaces, brass bands rose to prominence during the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are still over twenty active brass bands in towns and villages across Lancashire, performing concerts, at competitions, and in celebrations at the heart of their communities.
