Government support with energy bills
Winter Fuel Payment
See benefits for people who are State Pension age for information about Winter Fuel Payment.
Cold Weather Payment
You may get a Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.
You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November 2024 and 31 March 2025.
Payments are triggered if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days.
For more information and to check if your area is due a payment see Cold Weather Payment on GOV.UK
Warm Home Discount Scheme
The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill. The discount will not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you. You qualify if you either:
- get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- are on a low income and have high energy costs
You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter. If you live in a park home, you apply a different way.
If you might be eligible, you’ll get a letter between October 2024 and January 2025.
For more information and what to do if you think you're eligible but do not get a letter, see the Warm Home Discount Scheme on GOV.UK.
Watch out for scams
There is no need to apply for these support schemes, and you will never be asked for bank details.
