Supporting English as Additional Language (EAL) Learners
Who is this course for?
All practitioners working with children who have English as an additional language.
Course content
This course will help you to meet the needs of a nationally identified vulnerable group, EAL learners. The Ofsted inspection teams will be observing practices and "If children (EAL learners) are not developing a good standard of spoken English or in their early writing and literacy skills in English, inspectors should consider the impact on their progress and whether this might lead to a judgement that the overall quality of the provision is inadequate." (Early Years Inspection Handbook)
It explores how to support individual children/cohorts ensuring that they have a sufficient grasp of English and reflecting on whether EAL learner's well-being and involvement is high. You will be provided with a range of ideas for how to support children within the setting, how to engage with EAL parents and how to assess and promote further learning with EAL learners.
Resources and ideas include:
- Communicating effectively with EAL learners and how practitioners can model language well
- Ideas on how to engage with EAL parents
