Equalities in the early years
Who is this course for?
Equalities Named Co-ordinators and all those interested in improving their knowledge in this area.
This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Equality in the Early Years.
Course content
The Statutory Framework for the EYFS (2021) states that "Providers must follow their legal responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010" and ensure that "equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice is in place, ensuring that every child is included and supported".
You will have noticed the increased awareness and importance of equalities matters over the recent years, i.e., 'Black lives matter', unconscious bias, attitudes towards gender stereotypes, racial inequality to mention just a few. To build inclusive practice and equalities in your setting is all about being better informed, this training can support that process.
Key points the training will cover:
- Equalities and inclusion apply to all children and families
- Equity requires more than treating everyone the same
- Talking about race is a first step in countering racism
- Building awareness through first-hand experiences has lasting impact
- Ensure children can see themselves and their families reflected in the environment
- Focus on the child at the centre
- Practitioners working with all children acknowledge and value each child, emphasising what they can do through a strengths-based perspective on need and possible disability
