Who is this course for?

All practitioners working with young children.

This session is essential for those settings undertaking the 'Step with Boys' Award.

Course content

Are you struggling to engage all learners in your setting? This session will explore how to introduce elements of competitive challenge into your setting. Competition, in non-threatening, supportive environments can really motivate and engage learners. This approach can be particularly appealing to some boys.

Through attending the training, you will:

  • understand why competition and challenge may engage and motivate young learners
  • explore motivational strategies that can promote a successful learning environment
  • be given materials to support your teaching

The training explores:

  • why boys are more likely to choose to work in teams rather than as individuals
  • the intrinsic motivation of competition
  • 'game based learning' an approach used successfully by educationalists
  • links to sports psychology and the motivational aspects that can be applied to the early years practice
  • it draws on the expertise and pedagogy of Professor Steve Peters 'My Hidden Chimp', Bear Grylls 'A survival guide for life', Vicki Charlesworth 'Critical skills in the EY's' as well as many others
  • practical resources and ideas on how to implement this playful approach
