Children who are looked after (CLA) and adopted children: Recognising and meeting the needs of our vulnerable learners

Managers, designated leads and key persons of these vulnerable children in EYFS settings, both PVI and maintained.

This training is recommended for those undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Equality in the early years.

Course content

Many children in the care of the local authority, in foster care or with adoptive parents, struggle within educational settings. For children who have experienced early trauma in their short lives due to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), it can be incredibly difficult for them to engage in learning and to feel safe enough to trust those adults around them. Often these children's fears and anxieties prevent them from learning.

Children Looked After (CLA) are one of our most vulnerable groups of learners and therefore a key priority in Lancashire is to improve outcomes and life chances for these children. This course will help you understand early trauma, attachment theory, behaviours displayed and what you can do to support children in the environment and in your interactions through a range of positive strategies and interventions. It will also outline your responsibilities as the 'corporate parent' and walk you through your statutory requirements for the completion and submission of termly Personal Education Plans (PEPs), with completed examples shared.

Don't forget EYPP! Looked after and adopted children are eligible to receive Early Years Pupil Premium which can be used to attend and provide staff cover for this course.
