Step Outside
This quality improvement outdoor learning module focuses on raising standards and securing outstanding practice in the early years.
Step Outside involves whole team reflection on provision and practice. It has been proven that through this systematic approach of self evaluation, the principles of the EYFS have become embedded in practice, improving outcomes for children.
Consideration is given to a set of module standards and how to further improve and develop practice in these areas:
- The setting has a good understanding of the benefits of using the outdoors as a learning environment
- Parents are helped to understand the value of outdoor play
- The setting places importance in developing children’s interests in and respect for the uniqueness of the natural environment
- The outdoor environment is inclusive offering a wide range of opportunities and experiences to meet the diverse needs and interests of all the children
- The outdoor provision is child centred enabling children to take initiative, develop their independence and pursue their own ideas
- Adults actively join in children’s play, interests and pleasure, and help children to develop skills and confidence
- Adults record their observations of children engaged in outdoor play, using this information to inform future planning
- Health and safety considerations and supervision of children are paramount
- Adults encourage children to develop an awareness of risk and danger and to learn how to deal with them
This programme is for settings wanting to:
