Lancashire Quality Award – Mathematics in the Early Years
This award is an opportunity to reflect on and improve your practice and provision using our award materials and training with mentor support.
The self-evaluative reflective tool will support practitioners to fully consider the key skills required for learning and developing within all aspects of mathematics.
Consideration is given to a set of module standards and how to further improve and develop practice in these areas:
- Indoor Environment - The environment is mathematically rich and supports children’s emergent mathematical exploration.
- Outdoor Environment - The outdoor environment offers a wide range of mathematical experiences and opportunities.
- Routines - Practitioners understand, value and utilise the mathematical learning opportunities available during every day routines.
- Interactions - Practitioners support children to have enquiring minds and solve problems for themselves. They model mathematical language and use spontaneous opportunities to promote children’s mathematical thinking.
- Learning and Development - There are effective systems of observation, assessment and planning that meet the mathematical needs and interests of all children. Planning reflects appropriate breadth and balance in the teaching of maths. Data is analysed regularly and effectively used to inform provision.
- Parents - An effective partnership with parents supports families to understand and value their children’s mathematical thinking at home and in the setting.
- Leadership and Management - There is a strong commitment to mathematical professional development and keeping informed of new initiatives both within the setting and nationally. Practitioners have a secure knowledge of how children learn mathematics most effectively.
In order to be considered for the award at least one member of your team must attend each of the following essential training courses to support self-reflection of this module prior to submission:
- Developing early number for 3 to 5 year olds
- Developing shape, space and measure in the early years for 3-5 year olds
- Maths at play for under three's
- Maths outdoors
- Maths through continuous provision for three to five year olds
- Once upon a mathematical story - promoting maths through stories for three to fives
