Lancashire Quality Award – Equality in the Early Years

The Equality in the Early Years award will support practitioners to fully consider the key skills required for ensuring equitable practices, such as valuing difference and challenging stereotypical behaviours.

The aim will be to equip practitioners with the tools to help children to reflect on their differences and understand what makes them unique. This LQA module encapsulates equality as an integral element of early years practice that ensures good outcomes for all children, especially those that fall into the vulnerable categories.

The award is embedded within everyday routines and children’s play, supporting practitioners to be confident in their subject knowledge and therefore better at recognising how to make their learning opportunities inclusive to all.

Consideration is given to a set of module standards and how to further improve and develop practice in these areas:

  1. The setting meets its statutory obligations with respect to equality.
  2. The setting’s ethos positively promotes equality.
  3. Leaders and managers understand their responsibilities and take a lead role in the promotion of equality.
  4. There is effective monitoring of children’s achievement and attainment.
  5. Learning and teaching promote equality.
  6. Complaints policy in place and adhered to regarding incidents of inequality, discrimination, radicalisation and harassment.
  7. The setting is working in partnership with parents/carers and the wider community to promote positive attitudes to equality.
  8. Children are involved in the promotion of equality.
  9. There is effective monitoring of access and participation.
  10. Equality training needs for all staff are identified and met. All staff are aware of their responsibilities and feel confident and supported to carry them out.
