Educational psychology consultation information for parents and carers
A consultation is a type of educational psychology assessment.
It is a meeting with an educational psychologist, parents or carers and professionals who know the child or young person the best.
They will work together to find solutions for the problems the child or young person is experiencing.
The educational psychologist will use their specialist knowledge to:
- help to understand and meet the needs of the child or young person
- help everyone focus on solutions
Meetings usually last one hour and might take place in person or virtually on Microsoft Teams.
Action plan
A record will be created called an educational psychology action plan.
This will summarise the meeting and the next steps in supporting your child. School staff will share a copy of this with you.
What happens next
The adults in your child or young person's school will put in place and act upon the ideas that were generated in the consultation.
If appropriate, they will also speak with your child or young person to discuss the support that is going to be put in place.
Review
After an agreed time there will be a review between school staff and parents. If school staff and parents want further advice from the educational psychologist, they can request a further consultation at a later date.
Joining a virtual consultation online
Microsoft Teams is a programme that allows a group of people to meet via video call or to talk
using the telephone. If you have been told by the educational psychologist or by school staff that
a meeting will be via Microsoft Teams, please follow the guidance below.
