The Structural Engineer has responsibility for the structural integrity of all the County Councils portfolio of buildings. As well as providing complete structural engineering services for new build work, the structural engineers also undertake structural audits, concrete repairs and sports stadia structural inspections. Other services available include appraisals, feasibility studies, brief development and general structural advice.
1.1 Basic Service
The Structural Engineer can identify and solve problems using design techniques
based on the knowledge of the functional characteristics of structural
building materials. As a basic service, he advises on the need for geotechnical
and other surveys, prepares sketches, general arrangement drawings, specifications,
full design calculations, estimates, prepares reinforcement bar bending
schedules, and examines shop fabrication details from contractors.
1.2 Structural Audits
Undertake detailed safety inspections of buildings generally together
with regular safety inspections of concrete framed and panelled buildings
effected by calcium chloride, delamination, alkali aggregate reaction,
carbonation and high alumina cement.
1.3 Surveys and Investigations
Make structural surveys to ascertain any defect which may materially affect
the building safety, life and value. Investigate building failures. Prepare
specifications and schedules for repairs and restoration work, and inspect
their execution
