4. Scope and arrangement of the collection

The collection is medium-sized, holding material on the county of Lancashire in general, with more detailed material on Lytham St Anne's, Kirkham and the rural hinterland of Fylde District.

5. Catalogues and bibliographies

The Local Studies catalogue is available as part of the Lancashire County Library and Information Service's Talis online catalogue. It is possible to search by author, title, keyword, subject and class number; it uses the Lancashire Local Studies Classification Scheme. All volumes of the Lancashire Bibliography published to date are held, together with the Guide to the Lancashire Record Office, its Supplement, and its family history guide Finding Folk.

8. Rate books

None. The main collection of rate books for the county is held at the Lancashire Record Office.

9. Census enumerators' returns

Copies of census enumerators' returns are available on microfilm for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 for villages and towns of the Fylde District. A detailed list of coverage is available. The census returns for 1891 and 1901 are on microfiche. Some indices are provided by the Lancashire Family History Society.

All our libraries provide free access to the Ancestry website which gives access to Census Records for England, Wales and Scotland (1841-1901).

10. Parish records

Parish Registers held on microfiche: we hold copies of some of the original registers for Fylde and parts of Wyre dating up to 1900 held in the Lancashire Record Office. An index is available.

Various Lancashire Parish Register Society volumes for Fylde and Wyre.

The 1992 edition of the International Genealogical Index (IGI) is available on microfiche for Lancashire. The complete IGI is also available on line at www.familysearch.org.

The main collection of parish records for the county is held at the Lancashire Record Office.

Lancashire Lantern includes an index to stories from local newspapers covering several areas of the county. We have now started to index the Lytham St Annes newspapers.

13. Maps and plans

The library holds a set of 6" to 1 mile and 2½" to 1 mile Ordnance Survey maps of the area of the Fylde area; the earliest sheet held is dated 1847.

A complete set of current O.S. sheets at 1:50,000 is held.

Other maps include William Yates's map of Lancashire (1796), some plans of the Clifton Estate and a complete set of Goad plans from 1970 to date for Lytham and St. Annes.

15. Illustrations

A collection of over 1,300 photographs and postcards is held at St Anne's Library covering all areas of the Fylde. All are indexed and photocopied for easy viewing. We are in the process of digitising these images and the Library Service is making them available on our Image Archive which includes photographs from the county's various library collections; this is available as part of Lancashire Lantern.

An extensive collection of documentary and pamphlet material is held at St. Anne's library. It is all indexed and all available for browsing/photocopying. The material covers both coastal and inland Fylde areas.

The main repository of archives for the county is held at the Lancashire Record Office.

A good online source for the Lytham Area is the independently produced Lytham Online at http://www.lytham-online.co.u k . This is full of historical detail and images relating to the area around Lytham and St. Annes-on-Sea.

The Ancestry website, which includes Census Records for England Wales, Scotland the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands from 1841-1901, is freely available on public computers in all Lancashire Libraries and at Lancashire Record Office. Birth, Death and Marriage records and other Family History sources are also available through Ancestry.

The International Genealogical Index or Computer File Index of the Genealogical Society of Utah can be consulted on microfiche. This is also available on their Family Search website at www.familysearch.com.
