Community History - Serials; Periodicals

Some serial publications are concerned with a geographical area, e.g.

'Chetham Society' covering Lancashire and Cheshire (Founded 1843)

'Surtees Society' covering the ancient kingdom of Northumbria including Lancashire (Founded 1834)

'Lancashire Parish Register Society' (Founded 1897)

Others may cover a particular theme, e.g.

'Catholic Record Society' (Founded 1904 to transcribe, print and index Catholic registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths and other records).

Record Societies, such as:

'Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire' (Founded 1878 to transcribe and publish original documents) and 'Surtees Society', publish primary documentary sources e.g. by transcribing family papers, or diaries etc.

Other societies, such as the 'Chetham Society' publish secondary works, articles and monographs on particular historical topics e.g. prison reform in Lancashire.

Periodical titles include:  'Lancashire Archaeological Bulletin', 'Lancashire History Quarterly', 'Lancashire Life', 'Lancashire Magazine', 'The Record (Lancashire Authors' Association).
