On Saturday 14th June the Lancashire Children’s Book of the Year 2003 was awarded to Julie Bertagna for her book Exodus. Young judges presented Julie with her prize and thanked the University of Central Lancashire, publishers, teachers and the library service for supporting the award.

Aaron Fletcher on winning book Exodus: “We relate to this book because we are the ancestors that determine if these people will exist. It is up to us to make sure that this future never happens. Exodus links the past and the present and places them firmly in the future. We all want the courage of Mara and the Wing people, yet we must use this courage to ensure that the future portrayed in the book never happens.”

Rebecca Mitchell considering her favourite part of the award: “I think the most memorable part of this whole experience would have to be the debate, or should I say ‘heated discussion’ as we were all involved and voiced our opinions. I really enjoyed reading the books too and now I go to the library and read more often.”

Robyn Isherwood describing how for her all of the shortlisted books were winners: “Thank you to all of the authors who have written a book for this award. To me, all the authors, who reached the final ten, are winners.”

Mark Scully urging everyone to consider being a part of the award: “I would definitely recommend taking part in this award to anybody. As a result of being involved in the scheme this year I have met an author and numerous publishers, had my name and work go to print in the review booklet, read many enjoyable books, visited the University of Central Lancashire and County Hall and met some great new friends from all across the county. Surely that’s incentive enough to encourage anyone to take part isn't it?”

Matthew Hawley enthusing about the University of Central Lancashire’s involvement: “The generous welcome by sponsors, the University of Central Lancashire, gave us an opportunity to explore the impressive library giving us an insight into futuristic independent study.”
