Local government employees

Summary

The Local Government Association (LGA) publishes quarterly statistics on the number of local government employees in authorities across the country. The figures are available for all employees, full-time equivalents, by gender, and full- and part-time employees. Temporary and permanent employee results are also available. 

The figures are for quarter two (April to June) of 2024.

  • There were 45,504 employees in the 15 local authorities in Lancashire-14.
  • The county council employed 32,484 people, or 71.4% of the total.
  • Blackburn with Darwen (4,828) and Blackpool (3,436) unitary authorities were 18.2% of the total.
  • The 12 local authorities in the county council area employed 4,756 people (10.5% of the total), ranging from 889 in Lancaster City Council to 173 in Rossendale Borough Council.
  • There were 34,416 full-time equivalents (FTEs) for all 15 Lancashire authorities.
  • Overall, women accounted for 76.4% of the total employee headcount in the 15 authorities.
