The fifth anniversary celebrations of the ‘Together We Can Make the Difference’ road safety strategy have been making their mark throughout the County. To mark the anniversary year, a range of promotional activities and events have taken place, spreading the message of road safety for all to people across Lancashire.

A number of exhibitions were held at supermarkets and shopping centres across the twelve districts, offering shoppers road safety advice and useful resources and literature.

Clare Farrer, Principal Road Safety Adviser, explained:

“Since Make the Difference was launched back in 1998, we have received tremendous support from over 20,000 individuals, over 100 companies and organisations, schools and councils. These people have pledged their support to ongoing road safety campaigns and are clearly committed to making a difference.

“The strategy is going from strength to strength and will encompass part of the everyday work of the Road Safety Group. The exhibitions were held to say ‘thank you’ to all the supporters and to raise awareness of Make the Difference.”

Big name anniversary sign ups include Lancashire Constabulary’s Chief Constable, Paul Stephenson, and the North West Air Ambulance.

In a personal bid to support the aims of the strategy, Mr Stephenson follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pauline Clare. He said:

“Every year the Constabulary is set a number of objectives and road safety figures very prominently among these. My signing up to this strategy underlines our clear commitment to making Lancashire’s roads better places for the thousands of people using them every day.”

Explaining his decision to sign up to the high profile strategy on behalf of the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA), Paul West, Operations Manager said:

“63% of incidents attended by the NWAA are serious road crashes, mostly involving life threatening injury or death. We are committed as an integral part of the emergency service to saving lives.

“We are fully supported by the people of the North West and welcome the opportunity of informing the public what a vital role the Air Ambulance plays in reducing the tragedy and serious injury involving road traffic incidents.
