Theatre In Education

Theatre in Education was conceived as an attempt to bring the techniques of the Theatre into the classroom. The intent of these interactive performances, delivered by professional companies of actor-teachers, is to challenge the spectator into further thinking and feeling about the issues raised during the play.

The use of Theatre in Education in schools draws on the student's capacity for role-play - for projecting into imagined roles, characters and situations. It is a particularly powerful tool for delivering a road safety message and for attempting to challenge and influence road user attitudes and behaviour

Workshops during the performance help to reinforce the issues raised in the play, but to be really effective, the work does not stop here. For maximum impact and effect the theatrical experience in which the children have been involved needs to be built upon over subsequent weeks and months in order to hammer home the message and to make a real difference to young road users attitudes and behaviour.

Through Theatre in Education the children will explore:

  • The hazards that pose risks to their safety;
  • How those hazards can be eliminated, and risks reduced and managed;
  • Behaviour that contributes to or reduces risk;
  • Why people take risks;
  • The role of peer pressure, external influences and individual justification in risk taking.
