11.2 Noise

We will work to reduce the impact of traffic noise

Mitigating the impact of traffic on the people who live alongside roads is as important as trying to ensure that people can travel safely and reliably. Noise attenuation is therefore an important aspect of road construction and maintenance. On major highway schemes, the choice of route will take into account the effect of noise from traffic. Cuttings and false cuttings will be used to reduce levels wherever possible.

Tyre noise is a source of traffic noise and the nature of the wearing course of a road can greatly affect the level of the noise produced. Where roads require resurfacing, the wearing course will be selected to reduce the level of tyre noise generated near homes and sensitive buildings. Lancashire has employed thin bituminous layers in several resurfacing schemes and they have proved effective in reducing tyre noise.

Some surface treatments used in traffic calming measures cause tyre noise, and these are not used where they would affect people, for example, in urban areas and near schools and hospitals.
